Spinunity: Class types

Exercising is an activity promoted by health experts to help keep you in shape. There are a lot of ways to burn some calories and lose those extra pounds. You can choose from different types of sports and activities like basketball, swimming, playing tennis, and more. To make sure that they target all parts of the body, some people just go to the gym and use all the different pieces of equipment set up. Society has enforced the idea of staying in shape and working your body to be the healthiest it can be.

Another great form of exercise is indoor cycling or as some people call it ‘spin class’. Invented in the 1980s, an indoor cycling program was invented by South African bicycle racer Johnny Goldberg when he was struck by lightning while preparing for a race.

Since then, spin classes were a great way of getting our cycling fix while staying protected. It is a great alternative to regular cycling where you are exposed to traffic and other outdoor elements. Today, spinning classes are extremely popular especially in places like the United States and Australia.

Here at Spinunity, we make it our mission to get you into shape and make your body powerful. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a seasoned cyclist. We treat everyone the same and guarantee intensity levels that will get you sweating and your heart pumping. Our instructors are amazing at what they do and will do everything in their power to help you reach your goal. Whether you are trying to lose weight or simply maintain a toned body, we can help you out! Take a look at the class types we have here in Spinunity:

Why you should exercise regularly

Doctors and health experts always tell people to exercise and stay fit. It is a reminder that can prevent you from getting too tired, and even make you less susceptible to getting diseases like diabetes and hypertension. If you want to have a healthy body and feel confident in yourself when you look in the mirror, then you need to take the time to work out. In reality, exercising doesn’t have to be a chore. You can find a sport or an activity that you enjoy so that it can motivate you to work out.

Nowadays, people can get careless about what they eat and how active they are. Some like to stay at home and lounge on a couch all day while eating pizza while others are working out heavily and trying to lose weight fast. There should be a proper balance between these two so that you aren’t doing anything extreme. You can still eat junk food like ice cream or pizza, but there needs to be a balance between healthy food and the not so healthy food. Experts suggest meal planning with healthy food such as chicken, fish and veggies to keep you motivated and ready to eat a balanced diet daily.

You need to exercise regularly because it not only benefits your physical health but your mental and emotional well-being as well.  People say that when they exercise and do something they love, their mood is boosted and it helps them to be motivated. You can do this yourself and work on finding a sport or activity you like. There are a lot of options like playing basketball, swimming, riding a bike, or even taking a simple jog now and then. If you make an effort to be healthier and take care of your body, then you will have no trouble with obesity and other problems like diabetes.

Things to know before your first spin class

Riding bikes has been around for thousands of years, and for the past few decades, the world evolved and made new inventions to make cycling easier for people. Indoor cycling or spin class is one of these inventions. These two activities may seem similar, but they can differ in certain aspects. For example, when you get your bike outside and ride in the park, you can go at your own pace and stop whenever you want to. In a spin class, however, you will need to follow the pace of your teacher and fellow students. With this being said, take a look at some of the things you need to know before your first spin class:

  1. Arrive early
Just like any other class, it’s important to be on time and be able to prepare for your session. Some people need to change clothes while others want to adjust their bikes before starting class. Do your best to get there at least 10-15 minutes before it starts so you can be ready.
  2. Understand what a ‘tap back’ is
For the first time spinners, it could be your first time hearing the word ‘tap back’. It is a popular term and movement that people use during spin classes. All you need to do is come out of the bike’s saddle then return to an almost seating position, then go back up. You repeat this action multiple times until your instructor tells you to stop. Performing a ‘tap back’ can seem difficult at first, but you’ll get the hang of it the more you keep practising.
  3. Choose the right resistance
On one side of the bike, you will notice there is a round knob that will help you adjust the resistance. This will adjust how difficult it is to keep you from pedalling. The higher the resistance, the harder it is for you to pedal because it is the equivalent of biking up in an incline. Make sure to choose the right setting because you may be pedalling too easily or even overworking yourself.
  4. Take deep breaths
Even though spin classes are intense, you still need to remember to take deep breaths. The room will be surrounded by sweaty people, hot air and pulsing music so you need to remember to take a breath now and then. This will help steady your breathing and get a better grip on the workout.
  5. Avoid gripping the bars too tight
The whole point of a spin class is to help strengthen your core and glutes. If you lean on the bars or grip them too tightly during a lesson, you may strain your arms and shoulders instead. You could hurt yourself and steer the focus away from the parts of your body that need to be exercised. Throughout the class, make sure to check yourself and ensure that you aren’t leaning on the bars too much.
  6. Drink lots of water
Another cardinal rule of exercising is drinking plenty of water. It’s a good idea to bring your water bottle to keep beside you while you’re cycling. Since spin classes are high in intensity, your heart rate will go up and you’ll start sweating like crazy. Get some of your energy back by drinking water and staying hydrated.
  7. Follow your trainer
Joining a class means you have to cooperate, and this means you have to keep up the pace with your instructor and fellow students. Push yourself to go at their pace and copy the right movements. You can’t do your own thing in the middle of a class while everyone is following the teacher. If you want to work on your own, then the gym would probably be a better option.
